UNDP provided technical support to the TRRC, which concluded its public hearings in May 2021 and submitted its Final Report to the President in November 2021. The full report was made public by the Ministry of Justice during a press conference a month later (moj.gm/downloads), and copies were shared with the National Assembly, the UN Secretary General, ECOWAS and the AU. A national and international legal expert were deployed to the TRRC for 6 and 3 months respectively to work with the Working Group on the Final Report and assist in its finalization. The Report comprises of 17 volumes of thematic reports on violations committed during former President Jammehs government, including unlawful killings, torture, enforced disappearances, sexual and gender-based violence, inhuman and degrading treatment, witch hunting, fake HIV/AIDS treatment, and general and widespread abuse of public office. UNDP and OHCHR provided extensive support to the TRRC process since May 2017 with PBF funds, on nearly all aspects of the TRRCs work (outreach, investigations, reparations and victim support and reconciliation), and greatly assisted in kick-starting and accelerating its operations with the provision of over $450,000 in equipment, furniture, and IT solutions. The TRRC has achieved international recognition for its ground-breaking achievements in the history of truth commissions, especially for the level of collaboration between the TRRC and perpetrators – many of whom voluntarily came forward to confess atrocities – and for the level of public interest generated by the live streamed public hearings and outreach activities. In addition to public hearings, during which 393 witnesses, including 222 victims and 80 alleged or confessed perpetrators had testified, the TRRC has engaged over 50,000 Gambians at home and in the diaspora in community-led outreach activities. UNDP and OHCHR jointly mobilized $5millon from PBF for two post-TRRC projects: one focused on supporting the Government to implement TRRC recommendations ($3.5 million) and the other on the provision of mental health and psychosocial and other support services to SGBV survivors. The NHRC in March submitted its Annual Report to the National Assembly. This indicator tracks the number of individuals who have been officially recognized as victims of human rights violations or abuses and who have received reparations through formal or community-based transitional justice mechanisms. Republic of The Gambia is party to the Stockholm Convention and is therefore obligated to among other things, ensure the prohibition and /or elimination of the production and use of intentionally produced POPs; Ensure the reduction or elimination of releases from unintentionally produced POPs; and Ensure the environmentally sound management of stockpiles and wastes consisting of, containing, or contaminated with POPs. Since the ratification of the Stockholm convention by The Gambia in 2003, several efforts have been made to ensure adherence to its targets to protect human health and the environment. The “Strengthening national and municipal capacities for the sound management of PCBs and uPOPs in The Gambia” Project is therefore designed to facilitate improvement in the management of PCBs and Municipal Solid waste in The Gambia to enhance the implementation of the Convention through reduction in the risks to human health and the environment from exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Environmental vulnerabilities range from fragility of the land coupled with adverse impacts of natural hazards worsened by the emerging impacts of climate change. Climate change affects the country’s agriculture, tourism, fisheries, forestry, health sectors, threatens the livelihoods of people, reduces the resilience of ecosystems, adaptative capacities of communities, and contributes to unsustainable economic growth. The upland watershed ecosystem has been disturbed and degraded largely due to high population pressure on limited natural resources, increased erosion caused by high water runoff rates, drying of inland valleys and river tributaries, and water stress for crops and livestock. Over the years rapid growth in population as well as urbanization has contributed to deterioration of the environment. The natural forest continues to disappear or at least deteriorate due to high demand for fuel wood, charcoal and timber which has led to increase felling of trees.
