The training which enhanced participants’ knowledge on application of minimum energy efficiency standard, focused on 1) Ozone depletion phenomenon, causes and Effects; 2) Refrigerant-HFCs and Climate Change; 3) Kigali amendment and implications for the technicians; 4) Practical use of the alternative refrigerant R290 as the option in the offing with special emphasis on safety and energy efficiency and 5) The ban on used Air Conditioning imports enforcement and energy efficiency. A total of 200 technicians were trained on refrigeration best practices: 25 RAAG members, 130 NARWOA members and 45 industrial technicians. 2. Arrangement for the establishment and affiliation of the centre of excellence in Northern Ghana has been concluded with the University of Development Studies, Tamale. The office has been allocated and refurbishment of the space is ongoing. This centre will serve as the training centre for both the University and the community on refrigeration practices. 3. One video production on the “Do’s and Don’t’s of refrigeration” has been done and published for the general public and especially, technicians on best refrigeration practices. The video was done in English and Twi to enhance coverage. 4. Two separate monitoring activities were conducted in eight (8) regions of the country; Greater Accra, Eastern, Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, Central, Western and Volta Regions. 5. Improved management of inventory and maintenance of cold stores recorded. One training session on good house-keeping management was organized for cold store operators in the Ashanti region. Indicator 3.4.2: Percentage of Universal Periodic Review (UPR) (human rights) and CEDAW discrimination against women) recommendations that are implemented 10% (2017) Mark and record 17,000 Ghana Police Service weapons 5 communities sensitised against violent extremism 2 political parties with capacity in conflict management and resolution 10 hotspots are sensitised on electoral violence 50 Ghana Armed Forces Junior Officers trained 20,000 reached on anti stigma on covid19 2000 women benefit from business information In 2020 UNDP with support the National Commission for Small Arms and Light Weapons and the Ghana Police Service to mark and record over 10,000 weapons of the police in 11 regions in accordance with the international and sub regional instruments, such as the ECOWAS Convention on small arms and light weapons ,the United Nations Programme of Action (UNPoA),the International Tracing Instrument (ITI) and the Firearms Protocol (FP); to prevent further diversion of official police weapons which are sometimes used to commit crime. This has enhanced the weapons stockpile and inventory management of the Ghana Police Service With support from UNDP; Civil society organizations, law enforcement agencies,the media and HIV service providers have improved knowledge and capacities to facilitate effective implementation of anti- stigma policies and strategies. Current frameworks such as the Anti stigma strategy, Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) Act (938) and its legislative instrument (L.I. 2403) and the strategic plan to address barriers related to HIV and TB services ,have been developed to create the enabling environment for the uptake of HIV and TB services. However effective implementation and collaboration by all stakeholders would be crucial to ensure that no one is left behind. UNDP in partnership with Ghana AIDS Commission thus supported various engagements with 38 CSOs,19 (8M,11F) media personnel, 8 service providers to strengthen their capacities to understand prevailing anti stigma policies, strategies and laws and their roles in supporting effective implementation and monitoring of these provisions[ UNDP in partnership with Ghana Health Services (GHS) supported health promotion and COVID 19 risk communication to vulnerable populations in hard to reach areas including persons with disability, people living with HIV and the prisons. 21566 ( 9,729 M,11,837F) persons with disability including the visually impaired (3077 M,3732F), physically challenged (5162M 6131F) and hearing impaired(1490M 1974F) in 165 districts across the country have been empowered with relevant COVID 19 information in disability friendly formats (including braille and sign language) to prevent COVID 19 infection within their communities. They are therefore now able to protect themselves from COVID-19 infection Furthermore, capacities of prisons to prevent COVID-19 infection has been enhanced with the training of 380 (206M 174F) prison officials and wardens from 12 prison facilities across the country on relevant knowledge, skills and tools on COVID-19 prevention. They are therefore now able to ensure the protection of the rights of those incarcerated, so they are not left behind. In addition, a module on COVID 19 prevention in the prisons have been developed to support COVID 19 prevention education in the prisons. 5451(2079M, 3372F) persons living with HIV (PLHIV) have also been empowered with relevant information on hand hygiene, mask wearing, respiratory etiquette and treatment adherence during the COVID 19 pandemic. Community information centers in hard to reach areas in 15 regions across the country have reached a total of 530854 (255520M, 275334F) with targeted COVID 19 prevention information including information on hand hygiene, mask wearing [[E48]]. A web-based game on electoral laws, vigilantism and small arms regulations as part of measures to educate the youth who formed over 45% of the voter population in the 2020 general elections. The game was an innovative way of engaging and reaching out to many youth without the presence of officers on the ground. About 6700 people played the page within the first two weeks of its deployment. Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College trained 48 officers; 38 women and 10 males in a two week training and gained the relevant knowledge and skills in leadership, analytical and communication skills of junior-level army officers to enable them perform command and staff functions and enhance their understanding and knowledge of military operations. This enabled them to acquire the skills required to facilitate their nomination for a UN deployment. 296 ( F 115, M 181) border community members have increased knowledge on the threats of violent extremism and how to prevent radicalisation. Building capacities and creating awareness on the threat of violent extremism in coastal West Africa is considered as one of the ways to preventing violent extremism. capacity of 40 members made up of M31 and F9 of the National Democratic Congress has been strengthened to deal with internal party conflicts to prevent and manage conflicts. UNDP through the multi-stakeholder peace and governance platform supported the youth in four (4) hotspots Cheriponi, Tain, Lower Manya Krobo and Odododiodio to undertake peace march and peace education with over 1000 (F 550, M 450) youth and women participating. Participants demonstrated their commitment to contribute to peaceful Ghana by using their platforms to engage their members to be tolerant of others. UNDP Ghana in collaboration with the National Small Arms Commission, National Peace Council with support from German Government sensitized and improved the knowledge of community members particularly political party youth on the threats of the proliferation of smalls and vigilante activities in selected hotspot constituencies namely Cheriponi, Tain, Odododiodio, Sekyere Afram Plains and Yilo and Lower Manya Krobo. 390 (F128, M 262) benefitted directly from the sensitization. strengthened digital and financial inclusion for up to 2,000 women in the northern.In partnership with Vodafone Ghana Fonndation , Access Bank and Harvest Foundation, UNDP trained up to 2000 women in using digital wallets for saving rather than metal boxes. The women are organized in groups. Gender policy for NCCE National Peace Architecture with strengthened capacity Supporting governance institutions to build progressive gender policies remains critical to bridging existing gender inequality gaps and facilitating effective mainstreaming of gender into the operations and administrative activities. In this regard, through support from UNDP which enabled them to develop a gender policy, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has a better ability to undertake comprehensive and systematic action to effect sustained behavioural and organizational change towards gender equality and equity. NCCE currently has a Gender policy developed, Action Plan for Policy Implementation drawn, staff capacity (80 women, 137 men) built and enhanced on Gender Policy. It also has a communication Strategy and a Manual on Gender Policy developed. UNDP has contributed to the National Peace Council (NPC) being bonded and able to engage with partners and parties to conflict using collaborative leadership skills to help resolve conflicts. Environment and Climate Cluster: Waste Recovery Platform - UNDP provides a convening platform for Government, policy-makers, the private sector, NGOs and the informal sector on issues relating to developing a circular economy in waste. Benefits derived were in bringing behavioral methodologies (particularly Behavioral Insights) into the project’s work, leading to the scoping of a set of projects using behavioral methods. b. The AccLab also partnered with the Waste Recovery Platform in the production of a Solutions Mapping video aimed at highlighting the face of non-formal innovation in plastics recycling. Finally, the AccLab was also invited to speak, and presented on a global COVID-19 webinar (Ghana’s Waste Recovery Platform and COVID-19: promoting inclusion and innovation) led by the Cluster c. The AccLab applied its knowledge of data mapping and new data methods to support the Governance cluster in brainstorming, developing and implementing the 2020 Election Hotseat - a citizen education game that offered an entertaining medium of educating voters about Ghana’s electoral rules, sanctions, and recommended code of conduct before, during, and after the elections. A school’s competition that was part of the fair concluded with St. Catherine Senior High School, Obuasi Senior High Technical School and Methodist Senior High School were awarded cash prizes to implement innovative solutions for waste management in their schools. Following the fair, a technical meeting with experts has enabled the drafting of policy and program recommendations and actions for policy advocacy with relevant government ministries and building partnerships for program implementation. The other innovations are using all forms of plastic waste to produce valuable household items like curtain ropes, chair shoes and wood plastic composite for building and innovator that collects, segregates, and recycles plastic waste into products like cosmetic containers, sanitizer bottles and irrigation cans for farmers. In total, these innovators/businesses have recycled 1355.5 tons of plastic waste so far, provided 59 (40 females, 19 males) direct and 173 (122 females, 51 males) indirect jobs to people along the plastic waste value chain. 15 new business networks were established by the innovators with various institutions including research and academia, other businesses and incubator laps, local government authorities, among others. Revenue generated by all four innovators as at the time of reporting is GHS 409,166.8, equivalent of about $70,000. The innovators had attracted an additional investment with 5 entities. 1 firm (Ernst and Young, EY) provided business service solution to the companies by investigating factors and opportunities for growth with the companies and developed action plan with the companies to mitigate the factors and leverage the opportunities. No target set for this year as all activities related to this output was expected to be completed in 2020. However monitoring of the results spill over into 2021 and 2022 to assess the impact of the intervention. No result for this year, as output related actions were exhausted in 2020, however the results of the impact of the intervention through monitoring is being documented. The intervention proposed, which would be part of one of the key priority programmes under the REDD+ strategy, the Ghana Cocoa Forest REDD+ Programme, would seek to apply key activities and methods that would help curtail the rate of deforestation and forest degradation whiles enhancing the resilience of women and communities to address climate vulnerabilities and achieve related outcomes. As a result, the project looks at enhancing the adaptive capacity of community members, especially women, to climate change and drought. Areas suitable for cocoa production, are contracting as temperatures rise, floods increase, and soil salinization.The key immediate outcomes of the project will largely be on the following 2 key outcomes:1. This phase of the project presents interventions to scale up activities implemented under the earlier phases that will achieve multiple benefits for cocoa farming communities and for Ghana’s forests. Forest protection and restoration has been a key outcome area under the Mondelez Cocoa Life Program, which seeks to protect and restore the land and forests where cocoa is grown, working together with the farmers and communities. This is key as globally, deforestation accounts for close to 20% of greenhouse emissions. In Ghana, agriculture expansion, particularly cocoa, has been seen a key driver to deforestation, with the country being estimated to have lost close to 8% of its primary forest between the years 2002 and 2019. This phase of implementation seeks to will continue to support the Government of Ghana/the FC’s restoration efforts, primarily, at the Ayum and Pra-Subri Forest Reserves using the Modified Taungya System (MTS) model whiles strengthening community-led forest and natural resource conservation through the Community Resource Management Area (CREMA) approach. As a long-term implementing partner of the Cocoa Life Program, UNDP has supported community organization and the adoption of good environmental practices in cocoa landscapes, including re-introduction of shade with economic trees. UNDP has also supported a multi-stakeholder policy dialogue process to strengthen CREMA systems and strengthen policies on tree tenure.
