The project commissioned two scoping studies—The Scoping Study for the Development of Payment for Ecosystem Services Schemes in the Orange-Senqu River Basin and The Development of Innovative Private Public Partnership (PPP) Schemes Under the Auspices of ORASECOM. ORASECOM shared experiences and lessons learned at various regional conferences including: • 9th SADC River Basin Organisations / Shared Watercourse Institutions (RBOs/SWIs) Virtual Workshop, 22-23 September 2021 • 9th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Water Convention, Side Event: Transboundary cooperation from source to sea – Opportunities for action, 27 of September 2021 The project supported training of eight (8) ORASECOM staff and Task Team members to undergo training on water resource quality assessment, commonly known as SASS. Furthermore, a similar hands on training was offered in Lesotho and some officials from the Department of Water Affairs who were in the training our working towards accreditation. 2. The Joint Basin Survey (JBS) was successfully conducted by the Member States, ORASECOM Secretariat and the consulting company. The Laboratory Benchmarking was successfully completed with 9 national laboratories participating in the exercise. They analysed spiked samples as well as normal samples. The stakeholder engagements were virtual based and centred around the teachers as amplifying agents for reaching school children with water conservation messages. In addition to regional water quality monitoring (including JBS), the project is supporting a demonstration project in Lesotho that is aimed at addressing pollution (declining water quality) from industry, farming and municipalities in the Mohokare catchment, an important upper tributaries of the Orange-Senqu and which forms part of the border between Lesotho and South Africa. A baseline study was undertaken, and the report finalised in July 2021. The baseline identified pollution hotpots, mapped sources of pollution and identified initial measures to address the challenges. Two pilot containerized, solar-powered desalination plants have been completed, at a cost of US$150,000 in two villages of Rappelspan and Struizendam in the South-eastern part of Botswana. A community livelihoods project is being set up, giving community members access to small livestock-sheep and goats, and to community vegetable gardens. The official launch of the project by the office of the Republic of Botswana vice-president is scheduled for early 2022. A contractor was engaged to undertake a groundwater assessment in the Molopo basin. 3. Based on the recommendations of the Baseline assessment study, the activities to be implemented were identified and put to tender in March 2021. However, the response to the advert was low and had to be re-advertised and awarded in July 2021. The contractor was awarded a 12-month contract to implement a pilot-size rehabilitation project over an area of about 10 hectares. The area is in Alexander Bay Town in the Northern Cape province. The site is located between Alexkor Mine and Orange-Senqu River Mouth and falls under Richtersveld Local Municipality, within the Namaqua District Municipality. The work will include: (i) Soil stabilisation through environmentally friendly methods such as installation of erosion control blankets and erosion control cylinders. (ii) replanting of dune vegetation using a mix of wetland vegetation species. (iii) Designing and implementing an irrigation system to sustain the replanted vegetation. The result will give a good indication of what it will take to rehabilitate the area to the desired Ramsar status. > Results in 2022 4. Two studies have been completed and are being validated by stakeholders: i. Assessing Management Opportunities and determining sustainable options for harvesting the Alien Invasive Species- Prosopis ii. Assessing Economic Opportunites and Cost-Benefit Analysis of Profitable Uses of Prosopis. Tshimologong is a digital innovation ecosystem that propels entrepreneurship and grows the skills pipeline for the digital economy. Through this partnership we were able to tap into their rich data source on youth entrepreneurship. • The Lab was able to make use of the data sources provided by the Institute for Natural Resources (INR), a non-profit organization that works towards the wise use of natural resources in pursuit of sustainability for the good of the environment and the society, through multidisciplinary applied research. • Unconventionally, the Lab made use of the data resources of Al Baraka Bank and their Iqraa Trust, a Humanitarian organization that is tasked with the responsibilities of implementing some of its corporate social projects and initiatives and focuses on education, training, skills, development and health care and is active in all provinces of South Africa. • The Lab utilized data from the South African Red Cross Society to implement a social survey study during the COVID-19 lockdown. 1.2 • The Lab utilized mobile technology to deploy 50 youth, along with 5 Supervisors, into the communities in which they reside to register 6 500 households to receive emergency relief vouchers and to gather data on vulnerability and food security. • The Lab made use of UNICEF’s U-Report to empower youth to speak out on issues that they care about in their communities, encourage citizen-led development, and create positive change. • To assist in the COVID-19 relief efforts in the country, the Lab put out a call to makers, fabricators, and developers who wanted to assist with the country’s COVID-19 relief efforts by assisting in assembling innovations that fight the spread of this disease in a Makerthon. In recent decades, biodiversity finance tools and solutions have demonstrated their importance for achieving biodiversity and sustainable development goals. But since countries have not approached the issue of biodiversity finance in a comprehensive manner the choice and adoption of finance solutions has remained experimental and opportunistic. Improved choice, design and implementation of effective well-tailored finance solutions will strengthen countries’chances of achieving national and global biodiversity targets.The Biodiversity Finance Initiative – BIOFIN – is a global programme that developed, piloted, and is continuously improving a methodology to measure existing biodiversity expenditure levels, assess future financial needs, and design comprehensive plans to use finance tools and solutions that increase financing, effectiveness and efficiency of biodiversity management in up to 132 countries. BIOFIN’s first phase (2012-2018) enabled full assessments and initial implementation of finance plan elements in target countries. Significant scaling up of finance solutions is required in all countries to address the biodiversity finance challenge. BIOFIN’s second phase enables up to 132 countries to complete the design and implementation of priority finance solutions and allowed a further 11 countries to undertake the assessments and create the finance plan. The project comprises two distinct components: the timbuktoo Creatives Hub, located in Cape Town, and the timbuktoo University Pod (UniPod), based at the University of Johannesburg. Together, these components aim to stimulate youth entrepreneurship, drive inclusive innovation, and strengthen pathways from ideation to investment-readiness within South Africa’s innovation ecosystem.The Creatives Hub will serve as a national and continental focal point for creative entrepreneurs by providing curated programmes, co-creation spaces, and access to markets and strategic partners. The UniPod will function as a physical and institutional platform for capacity-building, prototyping, and innovation-led learning tailored for students and early-stage entrepreneurs.
